When surface in contact move relative to each other, the friction between the two surface convert kinetic energy into thermal energy . Friction is not itself a fundamental force.

It play in the total mechanical energy of an body because Frictional energy has it impact on total mechanical energy of an object which is that final mechanical energy would not be equal to initial mechanical energy as some energy might have lost in the from heat energy produced due to effect of frictional force acting between the bodies.
