The participle is a Non-finite verb and has the characteristics of both a verb and an adjective . It may , thus , be called 'Verbal Adjective'
I saw a man carrying a bag.
-The word 'carrying' like an adjective, qualifies the noun 'man' . It is formed from the verb 'carry' and has an object 'bag' . In this way,it has the characteristics of both a verb and an adjective. A participle is therefore a 'Verbal Adjective ' .
___________
There are three kinds of participles:
- The present participle
- The past participle
- The perfect particle
The present participle : It ends in in-ing
(Verb + ing). It represents an action which is incomplete or is still going on. It is also called the 'Active participle' .
- Note : The Gerund and the Present Participle have the same form . But whereas the 'gerund' acts like a 'noun' , the 'present participle' acts like an 'adjective' . Running is a good exercise. (Here 'running' is the 'name' of an action 'run'. Hence it is a Verbal Noun or a Gerund.
____________
The past participle : ( III form of verb) . It generally ends in '-ed' '-d' '-t' '-en' or '-n' . It represents a completed action. It is also called the 'Passive Participle' .
____________
