The vertical columns on the periodic table are called groups or families because of their similar chemical behavior. All the members of a family of elements have the same number of valence electrons and similar chemical properties. The horizontal rows on the periodic table are called periods.

2nd answer

All the elements present on earth are delivered to earth either by super nova from distant star or by comets striking earth. As the star is burnig the fuel which helps its keep burning is hydrogen, where fusion of hydrogen gives enormous power and helium as product. Then this helium reacts with photon and other hydrogen to form lithium …this cycle goes on untill iron is formed.

As the hydrogen in the star goes on getting meager, large amount of iron and other heavy metals have been already formed with with used hydrogen.

Now at this point the star either explodes or becomes black hole. If the star explodes these metals and heavy metals are catapulted out into universe due to force of super nova and they rain down on planets and cosmic rays. This is one reason why most of the elements on earth are metals

If we consider the radioactive decay table the most stable element fromed after radioactive decay where after its formation there will be no radioactive decay but redox rection is IRON. Same can be said with LEAD also. this can be one of the reason why much of the elemnts are metals.

1. the cause of similarities in the chemical properties of elements lying in a group is due to the fact that they are arranged in a way which have same valence electron in their last sale means if you see in a group all the elements are have having same number of valence electrons in their last cell due to which they wear the same properties for example in the group first the earth metals are there which are reactive and they have same properties.


2. about 80% of the elements in the periodic table are metals because after the research and after the discovery of them they are found to have metallic character so there metals not any specific reason is there just they are discovered and have the properties of metals like sodium potassium calcium and food all D group and all f block elements.
