  • The poem ‘Asleep in the Valley’ written by Arthur Rimbaud is an anti-war poem.
  • A soldier is found asleep in a valley covered with grass and the sun shines brightly. The whole  valley looks bright and lovely as the sunlight fills up the place.
  • The young soldier looks pale and is lying open-mouthed but has an innocent smile on his face while he appears to be asleep. However, the soldier is actually dead and two red holes are seen in his side which represents the two bullet wounds.
  • The unfortunate death of the soldier comes as a shock. The nature seems to provide the necessary heat to keep him warm and protect him from the cold. The poem ironically  presents the destruction that a soldier has to go through in a warfare.
