1. What is the gravitational potential energy of a 61.2 kg person standing on the roof of a 10-storey building relative to (a) the tenth floor, (b) the sixth floor, (c) the first floor. (each storey is 2.50 m high.)

The formula to find the Gravitational Potential Energy is

Gravitational P.E = mgh

Given that

mass = m = 61.2 kg

height of each storey = h = 2.5 m

the value of g = 10 m/s²

So height of the 1st floor = 2.5 m

height of the 6th floor = 2.5 (6) = 15 m

height of the 10th floor = 2.5(10) = 25 m

Roof is the 11th floor.

So height of the roof = 2.5(11) = 27.5 m

Now P.E at the roof = mgh = (61.2)(10)(27.5) = 16830 J

P.E at the roof = 16830 J

(a) P.E at the 10th floor = mgh = (61.2)(10)(25) = 15300 J

⇒ P.E at the roof is 1530 J more than P.E at the 10th floor.

(b) P.E at the 6th floor = mgh = (61.2)(10)(15) = 9180 J

⇒ P.E at the roof is 7650 J more than P.E at the 6th floor.

(c) P.E at the 1st floor = mgh = (61.2)(10)(2.5) = 1530 J

⇒ P.E at the roof is 15300 J more than P.E at the 1st floor.

I hope it will help you.
