(i) By measuring a physical quantity we define the properties of a material which the physical quantity is associated with, its very essential to define the things

(ii) Thinking about the SI, it's the most commonly used measurement system, which is defined in SI brochure

The SI unit of a physical quantity is defined differently for each quantity.

Sometimes the unit is based on the formula of quantity( FOR ex- density = mass/ volume, it's unit is the ratio of unit of mass to volume, that is kg/m³)

Sometimes the unit is given on the name of the scientist behind the discovery of quantity (For ex-Unit of FORCE= N, Newton)
