Answer:

Shahi Litchi

“Shahi” is an excellent and the choicest cultivar of litchi in Bihar. It is also popular in other litchi growing areas of the country like Uttaranchal, West Bengal and Tripura. In these areas it is known by some other name e.g. Muzaffarpur, Early Large Red or Large Red. The Litchi has a history of over 225 years in India. This cultivar became popular amongst the litchi growers in Bihar over a period of 100 year’s due to its excellent fruit quality and heavy bearing. It is a selection made by some enlightened farmers of the state in the past from the genotypes introduced to India from China through Burma in 1775. The cultivar is fully acclimatized and grows luxuriantly giving very good yield in Muzaffarpur and surrounding areas.

Trees are vigorous and spreading attaining a height of 5 – 6 m and redial spread of 6 – 7 m. The crown is dense and oblate spheroid (often wider than tall). It has compound leaf with six leaflets. Leaflets (measuring 13.0 - 14.0 cm in length and 4.2-4.4 cm in width) are medium, glossy, dark or light green in colour, pointed and almost canoe shaped (concave margins). The length of leaf petiole is 4.0 – 5.0 cm and leaf petiole 0.7 – 0.8 cm. The inflorescences are large compared with many other cultivars and the initial fruit set is very high (90-120 fruits / panicle).

It is an early maturing variety ready for harvest in 3rd week of May under Bihar conditions. Bearing is regular and profuse. Average yield varies from 100 to 150 kg/tree depending upon the management level of the orchard.

On an average fruits weigh 22 to 24 g and are oblong or oblong – conical, with even shoulders. The fruit skin is very thin and its colour at maturity is bright rose pink or crimson – red. Protuberances are not very sharp and pointed. They are somewhat flat at maturity and the fruits are very attractive to look at. The flesh or aril is milky-white, firm with 20.4 % TSS and 0.30 – 0.35 % acidity. The flesh has mild but very pleasant rosy flavour. Seeds are generally large (weighing 3.8 – 4.2 g) giving a flesh recovery of 67 to 70%. The percentage of chicken tongue seeds is 6-8%.

This is highly suitable for processing i.e. canning / making beverages and export to other countries both as fresh fruits as well as in processed forms. Cropping is regular but the variety is highly susceptible to sun-burning and skin cracking. At the moment it is the best litchi genotype available in the country and thus its name “Shahi”, a word in Hindi literally standing for majestic sublimity or grandeur in English. It is undoubtedly superb and offers a real delight to our palate during fruiting season.
