It refers to the initiation of replication of a chromosome.

  • The initiation of duplication is regulated by a particular DNA sequence known as the orisite.
  • In the host body such as a gene, virus or plasmid, foreign DNA linked to the replication origin may replicate and multiply. A single origin suffices for small DNAs, such as bacterial plasmids and small viruses.
  • Huge DNAs have multiple origins, and replication begins at each of them. if all replication started at a single origin, then the entire DNA mass would take too long to reproduce.
