1.When a ray of light passes through a prism, it bends towards the base of the prism. Thus, the path of the emergent ray differs from the path of incident ray. This is called the deviation produced by a prism.

2.he angle of deviation depends on the following four factors : (i) the angle of incidence. (ii) the material of prism (i.e. on refractive index ) (iii) the angle of prism. (iv) the colour or wavelength of light used.

3.The variation of angle of deviation δ with the angle of incidence i of the ray incident on the first refracting surface of the prism is shown in figure. For one angle of incidence it has a minimum value δmin .
