Question ↴

What is the universe made of?

Answer ↴

The universe is filled with billions of galaxies and trillions of stars, along with nearly uncountable numbers of planets, moons, asteroids, comets and clouds of dust and gas – all swirling in the vastness of space.

Types of substance ↴

  •  normal matter
  • dark matter and
  • dark energy .

Normal matter → Normal matter is luminous, that is, it interacts electromagnetically and gravitationally with other matter and with radiation. It doesn't necessarily shine like we think of a star shining.

Dark matter →  Dark matter is a form of matter thought to account for approximately 85% of the matter in the universe and about a quarter of its total mass–energy density or about 2.241×10⁻²⁷ kg/m³.

Dark energy → In physical cosmology and astronomy, dark energy is an unknown form of energy that affects the universe on the largest scales.
