Samudragupta was a ruler of the Gupta empire. He was the third emperor of the Gupta dynasty and ruled from 335 to 375 CE. Samudragupta was the son of Chandragupta I, who was the founder of the Gupta dynasty.

Samudraupta's greatest achievement was his expansion of the Gupta empire by launching a series of conquests across India. Samudragupta extended the empire from Magadha throughout North India by conquering parts of present day West Bengal, Assam, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and upto Gujarat and Punjab in the west.

3.The Guptas organized a system of provincial and local administration. The empire was divided into divisions called bhukth, and each bhukti was placed under the charge of an uparika. The bhuktis were divided into districts (vishayas), which were placed under the charge of a vishayapati.

4. Chandragupta-II strengthened his position and extended his influence by two possibly three important marriage alliances. (1) He married Kubernaga. a Naga princess. Though the Nagas had been several times defeated by Samudragupta, they have not annihilated and their power influences in Northern India were considerable.

5. This period became known as the Golden Age of India because it was marked by extensive inventions and discoveries in science, technology, engineering, art, dialectic, literature, logic, mathematics, astronomy, religion, and philosophy.
