1. Nelson Mandela was pained for his inability to thank his comrades in freedom struggle who were unable to see what their sacrifices had brought. This pained Mandela on becoming the president of South Africa. The pain of the apartheid made Nelson Mandela become the president of South Africa.

2. Mandela thought about the oppressor and the oppressed that both are robbed equally. A mail who takes away another man’s freedom is a prisoner of hatred. In the same way, if his freedom is taken away, they both are without freedom. So both of them must be liberated.

3. As Mandela says he was 'simply the sum of all African patriots,' he means he can connect with the unparalleled sacrifices of all those noble and brave men who have fought for African people's collective liberty. He was pained not being able to thank them, and not being able to see what their efforts had done.

4. The desire for the freedom of his people totally animated Nelson Mandelas life. He was transformed from a frightened young man to a bold one. The desire turned a law abiding attorney to a criminal. A family- loving husband was turned into a man without a home, changed a life-loving man into a monk.
