He defeated the Borbonic king that ruled the South of Italy with a little army mostly volunteers, and pulled the Savoia to unify Italy. 
Maybe Garibaldi was nice honest and true, but that was a not so clean stuff. Anyway, it worked and Italy got united, very thanks to him, for better or for worse.
