Abdul Kalam was 8 years old when the second World war broke out in 1939. He found that the demand for tamarind seeds increased so he used to collect the seeds and sell them to a provision shop located in Mosque Street. He used to get 1 anna (six paise) per day, which was a lotof money at that time.
