For the purpose of trade, Indian textiles were classified into striped and checked cotton; plain white cotton; plain dyed cotton; chintz; and embroidered cloth and silk goods. These were packed into different pieces and each piece was twenty yards long and one yard wide. So they were referred to as piece goods
