Ans.1]  On the contrary, HCl depressed or inhibited the activity of amylase; thus, only a small portion of starch was digested. - Physiologically, amylase is secreted by salivary glands in the mouth where the pH is about neutral, while pepsinogen conversion into pepsin is facilitated by a lower pH.

Ans.2]   Pepsinogen, inactive precursor form of pepsin, is secreted by Chief cells in the stomach. Pepsinogen is activated by Hydrochloric acid (secretion from Parietal cells) because Hydrochloric acid provides the necessary acidic environment for which pepsin works best.
