Given,

  • Two freight cars of mass 10 tons and 30 tons
  • Speed of car A = 4m/s

To find,

The velocity of the cars after a collision if they couple.

Solution,

The collision will take place between both cars. After the collision, both cars will stick to each other and travel with a common velocity. We also know that the collision is inelastic.

We can apply the concept of conservation of momentum.

Momentum before collision = momentum after collision. ---- eq(1)

Combined mass after collision = 10 tons + 30 tons = 40 tons

Momentum before collision = m_{A}v_{A} + m_{B}v_{B}

                                              = 10000kg*4m/s + 30000kg*0m/s

                                              = 40000kgm/s

Velocity of the combined masses be v.

Substituting in the equation 1 we have,

                       40000kgm/s = 40000kg*v

                          v = 1m/s

Therefore, the speed of combined masses after the collision will be 1m/s.
