The word Kabaddi have been derived from the tamil word “kai-pidi” (கைபிடி) which means “to hold hands”. Kabaddi received international exposure at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, demonstrated by India. The game was introduced in the Indian National Games at Kolkata in 1938.

Kabaddi first got international exposure at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It was also introduced at the Indian National Games held in Calcutta in 1938. The All India Kabaddi Federation (AIKF) was created in 1950 which gave the sport nationwide recognition.

Kabaddi made its first appearance as an exhibition sport at the 1982 and became an Asian Games event since 1990 in Beijing, China. Until the 2014 edition, India always dominated the event by winning highest number of gold medals in both men's and women's category.
