- Waterlogging is the saturation of soil with water. Soil may be regarded as waterlogged when it is nearly saturated with water much of the time such that its air phase is restricted and anaerobic conditions prevail.
- Avoid smearing the sides of planting holes on heavy soils — use a fork for digging and break down the sides. Grow plants in raised beds, or plant trees and shrubs on a slight mound, so the plant roots aren't sitting in the water. Use a very thick mulch of organic matter around particularly susceptible plants.
