1.The old man was sitting with dusty cloths and steel rimmed spectacles on the side of the road on the pontoon bridge. He didn’t move because he was too tired and couldn’t go any further

2.The unnamed narrator in the story was an army soldier. His work was to cross the bridge and explore the bridgehead beyond and find out what point the enemies had advanced which he did and returned over the bridge.

3.In this story the old man’s only family which he has is the animals which he takes cares of which and now which he has to leave because of the artillery and he is fighting with himself because he is conflict with himself because he has to leave for his survival and he also doesn’t want to leave his family.

4.The place he is referring to the region where the old man is because this area was about to become a warzone. It wasn’t advisable to stop here because if he stays here he will get killed because of the artillery.
