During the British rule, the country was divided between four main presidencies : Bengal Presidency with its capital Calcutta, Bombay Presidency with its capital Bombay, Madras Presidency with its capital Madras and North-Western Provinces. Due do this the main industrial development was going on here. Thus, resulting in the development of these cities (Calcutta, Bombay, Madras and Delhi). Another small cities which got a little development were Punjab, Nagpur, Sind, Agra, Penang, Oudh, etc.
