1. Which of these two elements - A=2,8,1 and B = 2,8,8,1 is more electropositive? 2. Why does the size of the atoms progressively become smaller when we move from sodium (Na) to chlorine (Cl) in the third period of the period table ?

1) element B is more electropositive , because it can easily give away the single electron present in it's outermost shell this is because,it's outermost shell is far away from the nucleus as compared to element A and thus experiences low forces of attraction from the nucleus
2)the size of the atom decreases as we go from left to right even along the same period, because, the nuclear charge increases as the atomic number increases (eventhough by a small no.)and the number of electrons also increases but however all the electrons are accomadated in only 3 orbitals(because the period is 3) thus increasing the forces of attraction between the nucleus and the electrons because the distance between them is small(it is the same for both Na and Cl , eventhough cl has more electrons). This in turn decreases the size of the atom when move from left to right across a period as the nucleus has a grater charge and tries to attract the electrons towards itself thus shrinking the size of the atom

Answer:

element B(2,8,8,1)
