1) The vacuum of outer space has essentially zero air. Because sound is just vibrating air, space has no air to vibrate and therefore no sound. If you are sitting in a space ship and another space ship explodes, you would hear nothing.

2) A new quilt is warmer because the air which is trapped inside the cotton or woolen clothing acts as an insulator and does not allow the transfer of heat. However, when the quilt gets older, the air spacing of the cotton or wool gets compressed it no longer remains a good insulator
