because for combustion (fire) oxygen is needed and when carbon dioxide is there instead of oxygen, then the process of combustion can't continue. So carbon dioxide is considered as a best fire extinguisher

combatproscool: Why do goldsmiths use the outermost zone of the flame for melting gold and silver?
pushpamitthu: because the outermost layer has the highest temperature which is suitable for melting gold and silver

Hyy..
Carbon dioxide extinguishes work by displacing oxygen, or taking away the oxygen element of the fire triangle. The carbon dioxide is also very cold as it comes out of theextinguisher, so it cools the fuel as well.that is why it is considered as a best fire extinguisher...
