John hallock was in need of money as he had many responsibilities.In order to fulfill his needs he was doing the job of a book keeper in a lumbar company.

QUESTION:- why couldn't John Hallock give his whole time to writing?
ANSWER:- John Hallock didn't give his Whole time for writing because he was greatly busy with the problem of his life and his family also,also he didn't write the ghost stories expect for Jenkins magazine as he had no time to write.

ANSWER:- the ghost of Helen appear before the writer because she wants to help him write a ghost story.she herself had been a writer in her other life but failed like Hallock. She appears before hallock so that they might stop using quija board
