The historians regard the history of modern period in India as the history of the colonial period because it was colonized by British from 1757 to 1947. The British turned India into a colony of supply of raw materials and market of finished goods.

The Indians were oppressed politically, economically and socially by the British and there was no liberty, democracy and freedom during this period. The people were denied their basic rights and freedom.

Many historians regarded modern period in India as the history of the colonial period because the British controlled over India and handled India as a colony. British East India Company conquered and dominated major parts of India and also made Calcutta as the capital of British India By appointing viceroys In India. Britishers extracted major wealth from India and also ruins the Indian handicrafts by cheaply made factory products.

British historians divided the Indian history into Hindu, Muslim and British periods. This periodisation does not apply to India because she was under the British rule where liberty, freedom and justice was denied to the natives. Hence, this period cannot be termed as 'modern'. It can be termed as 'colonial'.

The 18th century is regarded as the beginning of the history of modern India because this was the century when European powers began to acquire political power in India. With this, the earlier Mughal era of Indian history came to an end.

Historians use sources like: manuscripts, rock pillars and tablets,scripts on palm leaves, monuments, official documents preserved by British, etc. Ultimately, they use literary and archaeological sources. The British felt that the act of writing was important, so, they kept written official records.
