Water near land is always a clever choice. Every society, civilization requires water, for drinking, washing etc.  Being close to water helped the Indus Valley civilization, as they had great access to water. They used water for drinking, for their animals, bathing, washing clothes etc

Secondly, the land near water is fertile, so they had a lot of fertile land to plant crops on.

Basically, they didn't have problems for food and water, which resulted in their long last civilization.
