1. Animals respire animals respire in order to give energy through a process called respiration which involves oxidation of food hence producing energy in form of ATP molecules.

2. The mechanism of breathing the mechanism of breathing involves two phases breathing in and breathing out also known as inhalation and exhalation. Breathing in involves antagonistic activity of intercoastal muscles. External intercostal muscles contract and the internal intercostal muscles relax. The ribcage moves upward and out ward.

The diaphragm muscle contracts and flattens.

Volume in the chest cavity increases and pressure reduces below the atmospheric pressure.

The higher atmospheric pressure forces air to enter into the respiratory tubes (trachea) through the nostrils making lungs to inflate . That's inhalation
