1. Why does a metal tumbler feel warmer to the touch when compared to a plastic tumbler, when both are filled with hot water at the same temperature?

2. Why can heat be conducted through solids, liquids and gases but not through vacuum?

3. Why is it more effective for heaters to be placed closer to the floor and coolers to be placed closer to the ceiling?

4. Will heat be conducted along the length of a metal rod when the whole rod is at a uniform temperature?

5. Why does a plastic container keep the contents cold for a longer time than a metal container?

Answer:

Explanation:

1.This is because metal is a conductor of heat while non metal like plastic does not conduct heat and remains isolated from the thermodynamics principle

2.In an enclosed vessel the gas particles perform thermal movements. In their interaction with the vessel wall, the atoms and molecules are subjected to a large number of collisions. Each collision exerts a force on the vessel wall. This force exerted per unit area is called Pressure of the gas. Vacuum is the negative gauge pressure (below the atmospheric pressure). At this pressure, number of molecules is very less. So the interaction would also be less. Absolute vacuum is at zero pressure (empty of matter)

3.Coolers are always placed close to the ceiling because the density of the cold air is heavier and this enables the cold air to travel down towards the floor. It will replace the heat in the room and thus make the room cooler.

4.No , heat would not be conducted when the rod is at uniform temperature. Because heat moves from hotter place to colder place

5.A plastic container keep the contents cold longer than a metal container because metal container are good conductors of heat and they conduct the atmospheric heat of sun and hence they warm up the contents in them, while plastic containers are bad conductors of heat. Therefore plastic containers keeps the contents cold longer than metal container.
