This happens in sprints. The athlete dashes forward on the track and makes sure that athlete is sprinting in the best possible position. The sprinter is full of energy at the beginning of the race but gradually gets exhausted. At the end of the race, the sprinter has used all the energy to win the race. After the race is over and the sprinter is completely out of energy, the athlete breathes faster to take in oxygen and calm down. So, the reason why athlete breathes faster and deeper than usual after completing the race is to complete the requirement of oxygen and energy. This is what I have experienced too as I am also an athlete with State-level medals.
