in different times than that of the Northern Hemisphere?

It is because, the earth is a spherical shaped planet and only one half of the planet can experience the sunlight and the other half can only experience the night, that is, day and night varies from one hemisphere to other by the shape of the earth. So, as they get day and night at different periods they act opposite. That's why when southern hemisphere experiences winter solstice, opposing the southern hemisphere, northern hemisphere experiences winter solstice.
