(1)During ovulation, the ovum is released from the ovary and then remains alive for a day or two. If mating occurs during this time, the sperm has a chance to fuse with the ovum, resulting in zygote formation. During other times, since ovum is not released, there is no chance for fertilisation to occur.

(2)Prenatal sex determination was banned in India in 1994, under the Pre-conception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act.
