The poem is written by John Allyn Mc Alpin Perryman was an American poet and scholar born in Manchester, Oklahoma. He was a major figure in American poetry. His best known work is the dream songs....

Central idea

The central idea behind the poem is an awareness of the pain of loss and the courage it takes to accept it. The boy losses his favourite ball and is very upset. He can easily buy another ball but more than money or the new ball, it is the pain of losing the old one that matters the most. The poem show how all trough your life you will have to do things that you do not want to do and you will lose or have to give up the things you love. But, despite this you have to pearl to stand up to be strong and get on with your life no matter how much it hurts inside because it is the only way to survive.
