Answer:

  1. Sound requires a medium(solid, liquid or gas) to travel, and since vacuum is something which is not a medium, sound can't travel in vacuum. Whereas light can travel since light can be in the form of waves too, and waves can travel through vacuum.
  2. 300,000 kilometers per second

1. Why sound can't travel in vaccum, whereas light can travel?

Ans: Sound can't travel in vaccum because sound is a mechanical wave, therefore it needs a medium for propagation. As space or vaccum doesn't contains any form of matter or molecules, sound can't travel through vaccum. However, sound can travel through solids, liquids and gases, since they are forms of matter and have molecules for the propagation of sound. On the other hand, light can travel through vaccum because it isn't a mechanical wave, therefore it doesn't need any medium for propagation, and can travel through space. Example: Light from the Sun takes eight minutes to reach the Earth through space.

2. What is the speed of light in space?

Ans: The speed of light in vacuum or space is approximately 1,86,282 miles per second or 2,99,792 kilometers per second.

Nothing travels faster than the speed of light.
