1)Oxygen is small in size & the lone pairs on oxygen repel the bond pairs of O-O bond to larger extent than the lone pairs on sulphur in S-S bond.
The S-S bond energy 213kJ/Mol therefore bond strength is more compared to O-O bond energy 138kJ/mol.Sulphur naturally exists in nature as S8 molecules. On heating these rings break & link jointly in to long chains.Hence sulphur has greater tendency for catenation than oxygen.
-Vapour phase refining of titanium metal, titanium metal is converted to its volatile compound & then it is decomposed to give its pure metal. This method called van Arkel method.
Oxygen, nitrogen impurities in the titanium metal is removed & it is decomposed to give its pure metal. This method called van Arkel method.
Oxygen, nitrogen impurities in the titanium metal is removed & it is heated in evacuated vessel with iodine. The formed titanium iodide becomes volatile.
Ti+2L2→Til4
The titanium iodide is decomposed on a tungsten filament, heated about 1800K gives pure metal.
Froth flotation method of concentration of sulphide ore.
This method is used to remove gangue from sulphide ores. The ore is powered & mixed with water,to which collectors(pine oil, fatty acids etc)and froth stabilizers(cresols, aniline)are added.Rotating paddle causes froth which takes away all the mineral particles leaving behind the gangue. The mineral particles are recovered after drying.
