Gaura Devi led a group of women in the Chipko movement. On 26 March 1974, Gaura Devi, a peasant woman, gathered other women around her in a village in the Garhwal Himalayas and—by hugging trees and through other forms of defiance—together prevented loggers from felling trees.

They also held the water from the rains and the melting snow. If anyone ever cut them down her village would be washed away. Hence, she believed that the trees must be protected.
