Narrator 1: Many years ago, there lived in Wessex a farmer's son, whose name was Hubert. He was about 14 years old and was as remarkable for his goodness as his good looks. And indeed, he was a little vain.
Narrator 2: One cold Christmas Eve his father, having no other help on hand, sent him on an important errand to a small town several miles from home. Hubert traveled on horseback. He did not finish his business until very late, and by the time he started home it was after dark. His journey took him through the Vale of Blackmore, a lonely forest, that was thickly wooded.
Narraor 3: It must have been about nine o'clock when, riding though these woods on his faithful horse, Jerry, and singing a Christmas carol, Hubert thought he heard a noise. He remembered that many men had been mugged there by robbers. He said to himself-
Hubert: What do I care? My horse, Jerry, is too nimble to allow any highwayman to catch me.
Thieves: ha ha--indeed.
Narrator 1: Suddenly a man darted from the thicket on his right
Narrator 2: Another from the thicket to his left--
Narrator 3: And another from behind a tree trunk a few yards ahead.
Narrator 1: Hubert was pulled from his horse.
Narrator 2: An although he struck out with all his might, as a brave boy would naturally do
Hubert: No! Stop! My horse!
Narrator 3: He was overpowered.
Narrator 1: His arms were tied behind him, his legs were bound tightly together, and he was thrown into a ditch.
Narrator 2: With that, the robbers took off with his horse.
Hubert: Jerry!
