(1) The hyenas were in fact watching the elephant with respect instead of Gajpati. They wanted to fulfil their appetite by eating him but due to the elephant, they had stopped. Gajpati was sacred for his life as well.
(2) It became easier for the baby to crawl out of reach once gajpati dozed off. the baby stirred up and began to crawl away.
