Q. With the help of a labelled diagram explain various parts of a flower?
A. Pistil:The pistil is considered the “female” part of a flower because it produces seeds.
Petal: The petal is the colored part of the flower that gives it a unique shape.
Stamen:The stamen is considered the “male” art of a flower because it produces the pollen.
A flower can be divided into four whorls:
CALYX OR SEPAL:
Sepals are the green coloured structures which provides support and protect the internal parts of a flower. Calyx or sepals are mostly green in colour which helps in carrying out the process of photosynthesis.
COROLLA OR PETALS:
Petals or Corolla forms the second whorl of flower. These are usually bright and colourful which helps to attract insects and birds for pollination.
ANDROCEIUM OR STAMEN:
Stamen are the male reproductive organs of a flower. Each stamen consists of a long tube like structure called filament and a four lobed anther which contains male gamets called pollen grains. When the flower matures the pollen sac which contained pollen grains ruptures and pollen grains are released out to carry the process of fertilisation.
GYNOCEIUM OR PISTIL:
Pistil is the femake reproductive organ of a flower. It consists of ovary which is located at the base of the flower and contains ovules which are attached to the wall of ovary by the tissue called placenta. At the tip of ovary there is a long tube like structure called style . At the apex of style there is stigma which acts as a platform for the pollen grains to carry out the process of fertilisation.
