Forests exist in dry, wet, bitterly cold, and swelteringly hot climates. These different forests all have special characteristics that allow them to thrive in their particular climate. ... and boreal forests (taiga). There are also more specific types of forests within these larger regions.

There are broadly five categories of forests in India. They are named as Tropical evergreen forests, Tropical deciduous forests, Tropical thorn forests, Montane forests, and Swamp forests

Forests refers to a large tract of land covered with trees accompanying undergrowth of shrubs, herbs, and sustaining thousands of life forms.

Types of forests:

1. Rain forest:

  • These forests are found in the areas where the anual rainfall is more than 200 cm, average annual temp is between 25°C and 27°C and average annual humidity exceeds 77%.
  • The trees of these forest grows upto a height of 60m. Since this region remains warm and wet throughout the year, thus it has luxuriant type of vegetation. Trees of these forest do not have a fixed time to shed their leaves.
  • The main variety of trees found in these forests include rosewood , ebony, mahogony, toon, chpalas, sisso, gurjan, telsur, etc.

2. Tropical deciduous forest:

  • These forests are found in the areas with moderate or low annual rainfall of 100cm to 200 cm and the mean annual temperature of 24°C and 27°C
  • These forests are also known monsoon forests. They are the most widespread forests in India. The trees in these forests shed their leaves from six to eight weeks during spring and early summer.
  • The common trees of such forests are sal, teak, arjun, shisham, mahua, mulberry, palas, semul, and sandalwood.

3. Tropical Desert forest:

  • These forest are found in the areas which receives rainfall less than 50cm, the mean annual temperature ranges between 25°C to 27°C
  • These forests have Xerophytic vegetation. Due to paucity of rainfall, the trees are stunted with large patches of coarse grasses. The trees of these forests adapt themselves to survive in draught like condition. The trees remain leafless for most part of the year.
  • The important trees found here are babool, date palm, ber, khair, neem, kherjri, kanju, cactii, etc.
