Red Fort is situated near Yamuna River. It is made up of red sand stone. It was constructed by Shah Jahan during the period of 1639-48. Within this huge fort there are several magnificent buildings. Apart from Diwan-e-Khas, Shah Jahan constructed Rang Mahal, Nahar-i-Bahisht and Diwan-e-Am. In the Red Fort of Delhi, Shah Jahan had got a throne constructed for sitting which was studded with diamonds and pearls known as Takhat-i-Tahus. It was constructed under the supervision of Badal Khan. It costed about five crores of rupees and took a little more than seven years to complete. The canopy of this wonder-throne was supported by twelve pillars, each of which bore two peacocks encrusted with gems. The peacock throne was 3 yards in length, 2 yards in width and 5 yards in height. This throne was used by the Mughal Emperors until 1739 when Nadir Shah carried it away. The Red Fort has long been considered a symbol of control over India. It was from the ramparts of the Red Fort that the first Indian Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar lal Nehru, on 15th August, 1947, announced that India was free from colonial rule of Britishers.
