Answer:
The Portuguese were the first European traders who settled on the soil of India towards the close of the fifteenth century A.D. The first direct sea-route from Europe to India via Cape of Good Hope was opened by Vasco-da-Gama who reached the coast of Calicut in May 1498.
This began the direct trade between the countries of Western Europe and India. He comes to India as the representative of the king of Portugal. Therefore, the Portuguese were the first European nations who settled down in India as traders.
To his Portuguese navigator belongs the credit of opening the sea-route to India and of establishing direct commercial contact between India and Europe.
