Suman was daughter of Ram Prasad Shukla, he used to sold newspaper in city Banaras. Her mother used to work as tailor in one of the clothing firm. She had four other siblings too. Her two sisters used to work as maid and brothers as car washer. He was the only child, who used to go to school. She used to make garland to sell on commercial basis.
After passing her senior secondary shed decided to take admission in her collage. But her parents were not convinced, they said they cannot pay her collage fees. Her teacher suggested her to fill Indian Air Force cadet form. If she get selected she can join as a cadet in the Indian Air Force Academy. She did not informed her parents about this. She filled the form and started preparing for the exam. She got selected.
It was a big task to convince her parents. She was thinking about her orthodox family. They will not appreciate her to go Nagpur for her training. According to them girls should get married after 18. But she first insisted her teacher to ask them but they did not made their decision to send her out.
One day her maternal uncle arrived, he spoke to them and encourage her. He told them about the importance of girl education and even that she will help them financially if she become Air force officer. They got convinced.
