1. Write down three differences between acidic and basic oxides. Give one equation for the following : Formation of an acidic oxide Reaction of an acidic oxide with water Formation of a base from a basic oxide Reaction of an amphoteric oxide with an acid reaction of an amphoteric oxide with a base Name the following: An acidic oxide Two metals which form bases Two metals which form amphoteric oxides Two neutral oxides The products formed when Carbon dioxide dissolves in water. The products formed when zinc oxide reacts with sodium hydroxide. The acid formed by dissolving sulphur trioxide in water The acid formed when nitrogen dioxide dissolves in water

Answer:

ACIDIC OXIDES :

  • Acidic oxides are compound that can form acidic solution when dissolve in water .
  • pH is increased when dissolve in water .
  • React with bases forming a salt.
  • Also known as acid anhydrides.

BASIC OXIDES:

  • Basic oxides are compound that can form basic solution when dissolve in water.
  • pH is decreased when dissolved in water.
  • React with acids forming a salt.
  • Also known as base anhydrides.

  • An amphoteric oxide is an oxide that can act as either an acid or base in a reaction to produce a salt and water.
  • Amphoterism depends on the oxidation states available to a chemical species. Because metals have multiple oxidation states, they form amphoteric oxides and hydroxides.
  • Metals that display amphoterism include copper, zinc, lead, tin, beryllium, and aluminum.
  • Al2O3 is an amphoteric oxide. When reacted with HCl, it acts as a base to form the salt AlCl3. When reacted with NaOH, it acts as an acid to form NaAlO2.

Amphoteric oxides exhibit both basic as well as acidic properties. When they react with an acid, they produce salt and water, showing basic properties. While reacting with alkalies they form salt and water showing acidic properties.

For example

ZnO   exhibits basic behavior with  HCl

ZnO+2HCl→  ZnC l 2

                 zinc chloride

and acidic behavior with NaOH

 ZnO+2HCl→ZnCl2 +H2O (basic nature)

              zinc chloride

Similarly ,Al2O3  exhibits basic behavior with H2SO4

Al2O3+ 3H2SO4 = Al2(SO4)3 + 3H2O (basic nature)

and acidic behaviour with NaOH

Al2O3 + 2NaOH = 2NaAlO2 + H2O  (acidic nature)
