Decarboxylation reaction is used with Carboxylic acid salts to give alkanes.

Soda lime is a mixture of NaOH and Ca(OH)2.

Examples:

1) Sodium Ethanoate Decarboxylation:

                                      Ca(OH)2

CH3COONa + NaOH --------------->   Na2CO3 + CH4 (methane-alkane)

                                          △

2) Sodium propanoate Decarboxylation:

                                            Ca(OH)2

CH3CH2COONa + NaOH --------------->   Na2CO3 + C2H6 (ethane-alkane)

                                                  △
