THE ARMY DURING THE GUPTA PERIOD

  • The Imperial Guptas had the chance to achieve their successes through force of arms with an proficient fighting system. Historically, the best accounts of this come not from the Hindus themselves but from Chinese and Western observers. However, a contemporary Indian document, regarded as a military classic of the time, the Siva-Dhanur-veda, offers some insight into the military system of the Guptas.

  • The Guptas relied heavily on infantry archers, the bow being one of the dominant weapons of their army. The Hindu version of the longbow was composed of metal, or more typically bamboo, and fired a long bamboo cane arrow with a metal head.

  • Unlike the composite bows of Western and Central Asian foes, bows of this design would be less prone to warping in the damp and moist conditions often prevalent to the region.

THE REVENUE SYSTEM DURING THE GUPTA PERIOD

  • Besides the times the main source of income of the State of Gupta's was Land revenue. One sink of the produce was claimed as the royal revenue 'uparikara' (octroi) was a kind of tax levied on cloth, oil, etc. when transported from one city to another.
  • The Economy during the Gupta period was moving from 18 sources or types of Taxes levied on the peolple; the greater part of it was spent on works of public welfare. Land revenue was the main source was generally fixed at one-sixth of the produce.
  • In Gupta Empire, Land revenue was the main source of revenue. The land revenue during Gupta period was 1/6 to 1/4. The government revenue essentially came from land as commercial activity was no longer as big a contributor as it once was. Land revenue came from a variety of sources, like direct tax on the land as well as a tax on the produce of the land.
