First, consider either of them as one common factor to the other and detach them. Then the old expression can be transformed as this: (x-a)(x-b) = x(x-b)-a(x-b). This transformation removes one bracket. (Also (x-a)(x-b) = x(x-a)-b(x-a))

Second, combine the remaining part with the other bracket. Then we get: x(x-b)-a(x-b) = x^2-xb-ax+ab. (Also x(x-a)-b(x-a) = x^2-xa-bx+ba)

Last, put the similar factors together. This results in: x^2-(a+b)x+ab. (Also the answer is the same) (PS: The final expansion contains a bracket, which seems to be a paradox to the conclusion that we bring up at first. However, the bracket in the final expansion actually aims to simplify the expansion, which is another function of a bracket. This is math, though.)
