1 You are provided with an iron strip and a bar magnet. How will you distinguish them?
2 How does a compass needle work?

1) Since magnetic bar always faces in a particular direction when suspended (no matter where you place it) but Iron strip cannot. So the metallic strip which faces in a particular direction when suspended is the magnetic bar.

2) Compass needle is a magnet with south and north pole. The needle always faces towards the north direction and helps anyone to find all directions when he/she is lost.
