You have been provided with three test tubes. One of them
contains distilled water and the other two contain an acidic
solution and a basic solution respectively. If you are given only
red litmus paper, how will you identify the contents of each test
tube?

Hey !!!

To check the contents of each test tube :

We are provided with only red litmus paper.

  • Put the red litmus paper in all test tubes one by one,the solution which will change it into blue colour, it means it is a basic solution ( because a basic solution changes red litmus paper into blue ).

Now , we are left with only two test tubes.

  • Put that blue litmus paper in both the test tubes one by one ,the solution which will change it into red colour means it is an acidic solution ( because an acidic solution changes blue litmus paper into red ).

  • The left tube is distilled water. We can also check it by putting litmus paper. Hence, no change will be observed.
