2. Sunderlal Bahuguna was the first man to have spearheaded this eco-friendly movement called Chipko movement.

• The name of this movement is derived from the actions the protesters used to take in saving the trees.
• The protesters used to hug the trees and did not let them go and therefore the act of “Chipko” came into being.
• Bahuguna is known for his environmentalist movements and he earned both the Padma Vibhushan as well as the Padma Shri.
